WATCH: Magnussen crash with Sargeant brings out Safety Car in Miami GP as Haas driver hit with penalty
Share
There was drama halfway through the Miami Grand Prix when Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant collided during a close battle, resulting in Sargeant hitting the barriers and a Safety Car being called.
Magnussen had started to put his Haas alongside the Williams when Sargeant started to turn into the corner. This caused Magnussen to make contact with the American’s car, which ended up in the wall at Turn 3.
While the Dane was able to continue, the yellow flags were thrown before a Safety Car emerged on Lap 29 of 57 to allow for the stricken Williams to be cleared from the track, meaning that Sargeant became the first retirement from his home race.
The stewards deemed Magnussen to be at fault for the incident and handed him a 10-second time penalty, adding to a difficult weekend for the Haas driver after he received multiple penalties following Saturday’s Sprint.
That Safety Car during the race allowed McLaren's Lando Norris to pit and keep the lead, as he went on to win his maiden F1 Grand Prix.
